Aphex Napa Valley Red Wine

Nigel’s dream come true is to have fruit from this vineyard – masterfully planted by none other than David Abreu in a picturesque setting – in his fermentation tanks, his barrels and, ultimately, in his bottles. If there were such a thing as ‘wine Instagram hotspots’, the jewel that is Ecotone Vineyard would surely be one of the most sought-after on the West Coast.

On the western flank of Howell Mountain, roughly halfway up between the valley floor and the ridge, surrounded by woods and dense blackberry bushes, the vines nestle against the hillside. The vines seem to relish the shade provided by the mist on countless days, usually until just before midday.

We know that great wines are grown here, and not just since yesterday. And with his wine, Nigel once again demonstrates the calibre of this terroir.

Dark berry aromas blend with hints of orange and an exotic pomegranate scent, along with mineral nuances and a touch of pepper, to create an incredibly seductive bouquet.

Elegant and beguilingly charming, this powerful, wonderfully structured wine glides across my palate, hitting all the right notes. I’m thrilled. Or should I say entranced? However I look at it, the Aphex is simply a cracking wine, a ‘multi-layered’ Cabernet Sauvignon that you absolutely must have if you love Bordeaux-style wines with a bit more punch.
