Now we're getting into the Premier Crus and we're doing it right, because Clos Prieur is located directly below one of my absolute Grand Cru favorites, Mazis-Chambertin, where the vines are deeply rooted in pure limestone. Here grows a wine whose bouquet is composed of a fine blend of red and black berry fruit, overlying light licorice and all framing scents of violets. Take two: lilac, morello cherry and black cherry. Over and over again, the fragrance of Clos Prieur reassembles itself into an even more seductive perfume. The precise, fine-grained tannins lie on the palate like fine chalk dust in a velvety veil, while the radiant fruit is carried across the palate by lively, almost vibrating acidity, quite powerful, complex, shamelessly hinting at power, but never slipping into opulence. A focused, straightforward, complex wine. Great cinema at a fair price!
