Kodo Napa Valley Red Wine

‘Beating Heart’ is how Shae and Nigel translate the Japanese word ‘Kodo’. The pair chose this profound name to do justice to the significance of the land in which the vines for this great wine are rooted – a place sacred to the Wappo people. At a mere 2.5 acres – or almost exactly one hectare – this vineyard is small and lies within a conservation area in the Oakville municipal district, specifically in Hopper Creek Canyon, which winds its way away from civilisation.

Aromas of dark fruit, spices, leather and a hint of tobacco combine to create an exceptionally refined bouquet that inevitably tempts one to take a sip to see whether what the nose promises is also delivered on the palate. I am delighted to confirm that it is indeed, and how!

Dense yet with astonishing energy, the wine moves across the palate, coating it with velvety tannins and building intensity before a marvellous – perhaps even unexpected – freshness sets in, making the mouth water. The wine’s finish is wonderfully juicy and the tannins are of the very highest quality. The tongue clicks with satisfaction and the corners of the mouth turn up into a contented smile.

Well done, Shae and Nigel; your Kodo lives up to our high expectations. However, the limited availability of the wine won’t be able to please all our customers. It’s therefore advisable not to hesitate and to try and get hold of a few bottles straight away.
